What a Day at Valor is Like

The day starts with Morning Assembly where all of Valor gathers to review our Bible verses, sing a hymn, and then practice our hymn with our choir teacher.

Students then learn history in a one-room schoolhouse style for 45 minutes in a lecture + question and answer format.

After history, students in high school study literature and Shakespeare while students in 5th through 8th grade study math with the Singapore Math Curriculum. Younger students have an active learning class.

(A study hall room is available throughout the day for any student who needs to opt out of a class and use the time for other schoolwork.)

All of Valor assembles in the large kitchen for cooking class. Students chop vegetables, make sauces, and assemble their lunches before sitting down to each. Each family rotates bringing the food for the cooking class. 90% of our ingredients are gluten-free and dairy-free, and we offer vegan options at every lunch.

Students clean up from lunch and, if the weather permits, spend some time playing outside before heading to art class.

Valor comes together again after lunch for a one-room schoolhouse style artist study class that takes its inspiration from the Artist Studies on amblesideonline.org. Students re-create famous artworks to become more familiar with the artist and their style.

After art, students split into olders and youngers for science. The science is based on the Valor Memory Work sentences that the students learn in three cycles. The Valor Memory Work goes through 12th grade, and each year students review past memory work and memorize new concepts. While the three cycles of Valor science cover many science topics, most parents do additional science work at home and use the Valor Memory Work to make science come easier for their students.

After science, high school students have a Theology class while students in 1st through 8th grade have a “Listening to Literature” class. Valor allows parents to choose whether their students go up into the “olders” class or down into the “youngers” class at their discretion when students are in 8th and 9th grade.

For the next two class periods, both the olders and the youngers rotate Memory Work Review Games with Poetry and English Grammar.

The day winds down with a rotating class that features fallacies, the Bible as literature, P.E., and more.

When the weather is nice, Valor students and their mommas may opt to spend some time at the park together.
